Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

At Hospice of Love, we’re here to provide clear answers, compassionate guidance, and honest support every step of the way.

Hospice care is specialized support for individuals facing a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less (as certified by a physician). It focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life, rather than curative treatment. Hospice care supports both the patient and their family physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

It’s never too early to explore hospice care. If a person is experiencing worsening symptoms, frequent hospitalizations, or declining function due to a serious illness, hospice may be appropriate. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to call us—we’re happy to guide you through the process.

To be eligible for hospice, a patient must:

  • Have a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less (if the illness runs its normal course)
  • Elect to focus on comfort care rather than aggressive treatment

Eligibility is determined through an evaluation by your physician and the hospice medical team.

Not at all. Hospice isn’t about giving up—it’s about shifting the focus from curing an illness to living as fully and comfortably as possible. Many families say they wish they had started hospice care sooner, as it often brings peace, relief, and support.

Hospice care can be delivered wherever you call home, including:

No. Hospice care is 100% covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. This includes visits, medications, medical supplies, and support services related to the hospice diagnosis. We will help verify coverage and explain everything clearly—no surprise bills.

Yes. Your existing physician (known as the attending physician) remains an important part of your care team. We coordinate directly with them to ensure seamless care and communication.

In most cases, services can start within 24 hours or less, especially if there is an urgent need. We are available 24/7 to respond to referrals and answer questions.

There is no fixed time limit. As long as the patient remains eligible, hospice care can continue. If a patient’s condition improves, they may be discharged from hospice—and can return later if needed.

Our support continues. We offer grief counseling, follow-up phone calls, and bereavement services for at least 13 months after a loss. Families are never alone during or after the hospice journey.

You can contact us directly—no referral needed. We’ll guide you through the next steps, explain eligibility, and answer all of your questions.
